SUMMARY:January Educational Meeting: Assessing Substance Use & Addiction Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Join us! Our January educational meeting has two parts: \nAssessing substance use: an introduction to the American Society of Addictions Medicine assessment process \nThis presentation will introduce faith community nurses\, pastoral leaders\, and health ministers to the American Society of Addiction Medicine assessment criteria. Mr. Taghon will walk participants through the assessment using a standardized template and will explain how the assessment can be used to determine the Level of Care. \nPresenter: Dave Taghon CRM\, CADCI\, Addictions Specialist\, Linn County Alcohol and Drug Treatment \nAddiction treatment: An overview \nThis presentation will be a general discussion of the history\, epidemiology\, physiology\, and treatment options for treatment of substance use disorders\, with a focus on shame and stigma as barriers to successful treatment. Dr. Simmons will also cover evidence-based practices to dismantle stigmatization\, particularly the SAMHSA-supported trauma-informed approach to operations and treatment. He will review the evidence supporting medication for addiction treatment\, in particular methadone and buprenorphine for opioid use disorder\, and their cognates in the use of medications for the treatment of Type II diabetes. DESCRIPTION:Is a Faith Community Health Ministry in Your Future? \nA Faith Community Nurse is not simply a registered nurse who happens to be a member of a faith community. Faith Community Nursing is a nationally recognized nursing practice specialty. The Foundations of Faith Community Nursing Course prepares nurses to stand in the gap; to bridge the health care system and faith community. Faith Community Nurses and Health Ministers work together to open the door for important conversations about health and wellness of the mind\, body\, and spirit and provide additional caring connection and support for faith community members facing today’s many challenges. \nFaith Community Health Network is partnering to offer the Foundations for Faith Community Nursing for licensed registered nurses (RNs) and a parallel Foundations for Health Ministry course for nurses with inactive licenses and faith community lay members. The course is six sessions held on Zoom from 8am – 5pm on Mondays and Tuesdays: October 16-17\, 2023\, October 30-31\, 2023\, and November 13-14\, 2023. Cost for the six days of training is $275 for residents of Linn\, Benton or Lincoln Counties in Oregon and $325 for out-of-area residents. Course cost includes four books and 40+ continuing education contact hours. We will host an in-person reception from 6:30pm – 8:00pm on November 14\, 2023 for those who can attend.
